With the exhibition “But You Can’t Use Anything,” Galleri Syster presents the first exhibition under the title “In Praise of the Unnecessary” The theme comes from the feeling that art has been kidnapped. That there are expectations of art that it should be useful. That it should be an active part of the social debate, the climate movement, and in working for peace in the world. Furthermore, there are expectations of art that it should help communities grow and residential areas feel homely. Contemporary art is our client, and it needs freedom. Contemporary art needs its own space to develop to its full potential; it must be allowed to fail and be enough in itself. It should be allowed to be unnecessary!
“We have all thought about the meaning of art and the importance of art being allowed to exist for its own sake, without being there for anything else. We also have many personal experiences of when it doesn’t work that way.
This further led to questions about unnecessaryness and value both in life and in art. What we may experience as unnecessary, all the unplanned detours and dead ends, what value does it have? What sometimes results in a lot of “failed” art and “wasted” time. How do you find the trust to let go of control and see what actually happens?
How important is the unnecessary, the surprising, for creativity and inspiration? Necessity is often linked to efficiency and usability.
Human value, like the intrinsic value of art, implies a value in itself regardless of performance. Must different values be set against each other? How much are we guided by inner and outer values? Is the unnecessary necessary?”
The artists will work on site in the gallery for three weeks and the exhibition will gradually develop with space for the ideas and thoughts that develop during the work. The working period will end with a public opening on May 8, and then the exhibition will also be on display on May 9 and 10.
